Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve and results in a gradual loss of vision. It is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. It usually develops over years without any symptoms. People at high risk for glaucoma include those over the age of 40, near-sighted, diabetic, African-America, or with a family history of Glaucoma.

Most people will not notice any symptoms of Glaucoma until the disease progresses to an advanced state. But regular eye exams will monitor any changes and determine whether you have Glaucoma. Once diagnosed, Glaucoma can be controlled with eye drops to lower the pressure in the eyes. There are also laser treatments and surgical methods to control the pressure in the eyes to slow the progression of damage to the Optic Nerve.
