Cataract surgery has come a long way. With the development of a 10-minute procedure time and premium lenses that offer clear distance and near vision after surgery, the most difficult aspect of the surgery is often the eye drop regimen. Eye drops often cost hundreds of dollars resulting in financial stress for the patients. Many of the patients are elderly and may have trouble remembering the frequency of eye drops or experience difficulty instilling the eye drops.

Dr. Gerald Dunham, a leading cataract surgeon in central New Jersey who has performed thousands of cataract procedures, is paving the way by offering dropless cataract surgery to his patients. During the surgery, a sterile formulation of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications are deposited directly into the eye to protect the eye from infection and inflammation after the surgery. This treatment eliminates the need to use eye drops post operatively.

“The development of the dropless cataract surgery technique is the next logical step in improving the patient’s cataract surgical experience, as well as adding a measure of safety for protection against infection and inflammation,” says Dr. Dunham.

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States. Most age-related cataracts are caused by the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight which causes clouding of the natural lens inside the eyes. During cataract surgery, the natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens implant to restore vision. Dr. Dunham offers cutting-edge technology to his patients with premium lenses that correct for distance and near vision, reducing their dependence on glasses.
